Everyone wants to eat as much healthy food as they can. While that's a noble goal to have, it's not entirely that easy to do so. No matter how much you want the cabinets and fridges in your Richmond hill homes to be filled with as much healthy, local, and organic food, it takes a lot more than just willpower for it to happen. You can't just make a wish for some local chicken or organic bananas and then have them suddenly appear on the plates in front of in your North York condos. It just doesn't work that way.
You have to actually want to eat healthier. Not just say you want to. When it comes to eating healthier, one way to do so is by eating locally produced food. There's this idea that the only reason to eat local is because it tastes better. Sure, eating food that is home grown and fresh does taste better and is better for your body than some processed food, but there are other reasons to eat local food. So, why eat local? Other than for health reasons?
Well, one reason to eat local is because of how much better it is on the environment. Locally grown food has a far less negative impact on the environment surrounding your Oakville Ontario real estate property than manufactured, processed food that's shipped in from somewhere else. When it comes to shipping food, there's a term used to determine how much it takes for food to travel. That term is, "food miles." Food miles determines the distance food travels from the plant it's manufactured in to it's final destination. Which is usually the store you buy it from. The farther away the plant is from your PEI real estate property, the more oil and gas is used in the shipping process. That means more burning of fossil fuels which is bad for the environment.
So, it's safe to say that if you buy local, the oils and gas used to ship are much less, sometimes even nonexistent. You can cut them down to zero if you buy your food directly at local farmers' markets. If buying local food means that not only can you eat food that's fresher and better for your body, but also better for the environment, shouldn't you consider it? It might a bit more expensive to fill up your fridge or stock up your cabinets in your Ajax condos with local food but isn't saving the environment a price worth paying?
Eating local food also has other benefits such as giving back to the local economy, trying new flavours, knowing what's going into your body and supporting smaller farms. All reasons why you should eat local foods.
