Gone are the days when you could expect to get a decent paying job in an office just because you took a business English course in high school. Almost all of today's careers, from day care worker to carpenter, require further education past the high school level. There are many different types of school out there, and choosing one can be daunting. To help you learn what types of further education are available to you and which type would be most appropriate for your desired career, read on.
University
Most high school students choose to take a crack at universities once they graduate because a university degree is thought to open the most doors. However, though a degree in Art History will help you sell Canadian art prints, and you cannot be a doctor or lawyer without at least eight years of university, not all university programs have good career prospects. Therefore you must choose your program carefully or you will be with a very expensive piece of paper and nothing else.
College
An alternative to university is college, which grants diplomas in more practical subjects rather than degrees like a university. Teaching styles at a college tend to be more focuses on the practicalities of each career rather than pure academics like in university. You cannot be an architect in Toronto by taking courses at a college, but you can end up with steady employment in a career field such as early childhood education, licensed practical nursing, or information technology.

Trade School
If a skilled trade is what you're aiming for, a trade or polytechnic school is the type of education you'll need. In a trade school, brief period of classroom learning are augmented with practical work in the field so that graduates are ready and able to leap right into an apprenticeship or low level skilled trade position. Careers that a trade school can prepare you for include hydro excavation, cosmetician, carpenter, plumber, and automotive technician.
Certifications
Some careers do not require you to attend a whole program at a post secondary education school. For many careers, you simply need to get a certification of your skills, which can involve taking a course in dental marketing or food safety over the weekend. You can get certifications in field such as first aid, workplace hazard prevention, cake decorating, and operating a small business that will make you attractive to employers or investors.
